UG focuses on maternal and child health, and nutrition.
UG's quality of faculty, facilities, research, and international collaboration are reflected in its recent ranking as the topmost university in West Africa. Areas of research focus for UG faculty include infectious and non-communicable diseases, mental health, climate change, maternal health, etc.
Elements that make UG a strong partner include:
- The Office of Research, Innovation and Development (ORID), which promotes, coordinates and facilitates research activities; ORID manages external research funds of more than $52 million from donors including National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and National Cancer Institute (NCI), among other sponsors.
- The Office of International Programs, responsible for coordinating and promoting relations with international students and scholars
- Several research institutions, including the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research and the West African Center for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens
For nearly 25 years, UC Davis has collaborated with UG in research and capacity building: several key studies in maternal and child nutrition have been completed in Ghana, and a number of Ghanaians have received their PhD from UC Davis and have returned to UG or continued to work in the international arena.
