Hesperian offers opportunities for students interested in volunteering to support Hesperian’s work including activities described below. Hesperian Health Guides is a nonprofit health organization and health education source that supports individuals and communities in their struggles to realize the right to health.Hesperian is offering internships for students interested in volunteering to support Hesperian's work in field-testing activities and content for materials, user-testing Family Planning and Safe Pregnancy and Birth phone apps, assisting global partners in market research and distribution strategies, and formatting and proofreading new content for release in the digital platform.

Internship description: Hesperian seeks an intern to support outreach for and research on our Family Planning app (FP app) in Spanish in the US context. Through engagement on social media, by email, or by other means, the intern will support the development of partnerships with organizations throughout California to promote use of the FP app with Spanish-speaking communities.


Tasks intern will work on: The intern will build upon pilot research on the use of the FP app by reproductive health promotorxs in California to further understand potential use of the FP app by people promoting health with Spanish speaking populations. The intern will also have an opportunity to learn about Hesperian’s work more generally, and will coordinate twice weekly with Hesperian’s digital projects staff.


Organization needs: Highly organized and self-motivated students

Skills required:

  • Commitment to Hesperian’s work, mission, and philosophy.
  • Interest in and familiarity with family planning and reproductive justice.
  • Good communication skills (strong people skills).
  • Ideally, some coursework or experience with qualitative and quantitative research methods.
  • Interest in and success working remotely, including collaborating with partner organizations and conducting meetings or interviews by videoconference.

Hesperian Health Guides

Location: Berkeley, CA; This position is remote with the possibility of in-person work if pandemic restrictions permit.

Language competency: Bilingual in Spanish and English

Internship timeframe:  6-12 weeks during Summer 2023

Hours per week: 6 - 10 hours

Institutional Logistical Comments: Remote, with the possibility of in-person coordination/joint work if pandemic restrictions permit (based out of our downtown Berkeley office at 1919 Addison street, suite 304)
