Shamba Maisha Study

The Shamba Maisha study is looking for a Research Intern who is interested in working in a social-behavioral academic research setting. The study is based in Kenya at the intersection of food insecurity and health, among populations of people living with HIV (PLHIV).

A good fit with the study is an intern who is interested in qualitative data coding and analysis, grant and proposal writing, submitting institutional review board (IRB) applications, data collection and analysis, and dissemination of study results. Ideally, the intern would have sensitivity around topics related to PLHIV. 

The intern will work closely with a UCSF Project Manager who will supervise duties and provide ongoing support and mentorship. 

Tasks intern will work on: 

  • Qualitative data coding and analysis
  • Basic quantitative data analysis 
  • Literature reviews for grant proposals and manuscripts
  • Drafting and editing sections of grant proposals and manuscripts 
  • Supporting the project manager on data collection issues as they arise
  • Taking minutes during meetings 
  • Drafting of reports and PowerPoints to share research with stakeholders

Organization needs: Highly motivated undergraduate students to assist with the above tasks for the Shamba Maisha study 

Skills required: Undergraduate students interested in a career in public health. Preferred but not required: Experience conducting qualitative data coding and analysis; Basic knowledge of SAS or Stata; Basic knowledge of epidemiology and research design.
